The Morning Rituals for Maha shivratri 2022

Every morning of Maha Shivratri starts with the devotees taking an early Sun Bath in nearby holy rivers and ponds! Later, after wearing new, fresh, steamed clothes they offer prayers to God Sun and God Vishnu as a part of the purification of the Soul. 

They offer fruits and beetle leaves for fulfilling their desires and some burn Incense Sticks for wealth. Some Devotees also prepare Fasting Prashad and donate it to the poor along with new clothes, fruits and dry fruits. 

The Bath Ritual of Shiva Linga – Shiv Abhishek

Devotees, especially the women, offer fresh flower petals, holy river water, cow milk or vermillion on the Shiva Linga as a usual tradition, but there are many other ways of bathing the Shiva Linga to attain different achievements in life. 

The bathing of Shiva Linga in water, milk, honey, and wood apple or bel leaves signifies the purification of the soul. According to the Shiva Purana, devotees give a special bath to the Shiva Linga every three hours with milk, yoghurt, honey, sandalwood paste, and rose water. Pooja, meditation, and hymning of ‘Om Namah Shivaya’ precede the Ritual Shiva Linga Bath. 

For Shiva pooja, devotees traditionally utilize the leaves of the forest tree Aegle marmelos (bilwa, maredu, wood apple). They then adorn the Shiva Linga with Bilwa leaves, which must be a stalk with three leaves. On this day, a particular offering to the god is ber or jujube fruit. Some also offer beetle leaves. 

Some people also present bilwa leaves in the belief that it will make Goddess Lakshmi happy. On the other hand, some think that these offerings help in calming the hot-tempered god, Shiva. Many devotees also place flowers and garlands around the linga, as well as incense sticks and fruit.

Pooja Ritual For Mahashivratri 2022

When it comes to How to Celebrate Maha Shivratri in 2022, the most basic thing to know is to how to conduct a pooja ritual. The Pooja must have six essential holy items to make it successful. You can place ghee lamps during the night in every corner of your house & temple. It is to attract knowledge and wisdom. 

Most people spend their days at the temple chanting Shiva glories and verses and remembering his virtues. In some homes in India, people make their own Shiv Linga for Pooja rituals. They use either Mud or Wheat Atta to make it. 

After doing the legendary Shiv Abhishek, by offering milk, rose water, sandalwood paste, yoghurt, honey, Ghee, sugar and water on the Ling, they present Dhup and Dhua in front of God Shiva’s Pratima (Statue). 

People at home should also start the pooja after sunset on Shivratri and continue the pooja till the next sunrise. Offering Vibhuti (the sacred Ash) during the Maha Shivratri Pooja is also important in prevalent in some parts of India. 

We strongly recommend that you do not spend time on Shivratri night by binging on movies or playing video games. Instead, abstain from all forms of indulgence. Strict prohibitions include speaking/spreading falsehoods, quarrels, eating non-vegetarian food, using addictive substances, and consuming alcohol.

The Night Shiva worship

Many people believe that fasting is more beneficial than a night-long vigil (Ratijoga) in order to please Lord Shiva. The importance of Fasting and Vigil together is to ultimately get control over one’s desires and learn to regulate one’s senses. 

It should be accompanied by Shiva Pooja or Mandali Group Bhajan Sessions. In order to worship Lord Shiva, devotees remain awake all night and spend the night in Shiva temples. On Shivaratri, devotees sing hymns and verses in praise and devotion to Lord Shiva throughout the night and continuously chant ‘Om Namah Shivay’. 

Priests continue to provide special Shiva devotion during the nightlong prayer vigil. Lord Shiva is fed special food cooked from seasonal fruits, root vegetables, and coconuts during this religious devotion. Those who observe the Shivaratri Fast eat the prasad presented to Shiva the next morning to break their fast.

Fasting Foods for Mahashivratri 2022

Being one of the major festivals in Hinduism, keeping a Fast on Maha Shivratri is extremely common throughout all the regions in India. Devotees keep a fast on this auspicious day and break it the next morning. It is only successful if the devotee abstains from bad thoughts, bad company, bad deeds and bad words. Practising virtues and keeping the evils at bay will make the devotee’s desire come true. 

They consume Vrat ka Khana (Fasting Meals) throughout the day i.e. Aloo Tikki, Aloo Pakoda, Aloo Khichdi, Sweet Potato Chaat, Aloo Kadhi, Sabudana (tapioca) Khichdi, Sabudana Pakora, Sabudana Vada, Kuttu Singhare ki Puri, Phallar – Fruits, Dry Fruits, Milk and water, Raw Banana Vadas, Singhada Flour Pakoda, Spices and salts like Cumin or Cumin Powder, Black Pepper Powder, Green Cardamom, Cinnamon, Ajwain, Black Peppercorn and Sendha Namak. 

Other milk sweets like Thandai, Badaam Doodh (almond milk) Makhane ki Kheer, Sabudana Kheer can also be consumed. Fasting in its strictest form involves refraining from food, drinks, and water. The moderate version of fasting permits milk, water, and fruits to still be consumed.

Maha Shivratri is among Hinduism’s most important festivals, dedicated to Lord Shiva’s devotion. Maha  Shivratri, unlike some other festivals, is not a time for partying and feasting. 

It is a time to meditate on the Lord, go to temples, perform Shiv puja at home, and engage in spiritual activities.
