The Shri Maharashtra Panchayat is a Maharashtrian organisation in Karachi that organises Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Pakistan. According to Mythology, people believe that Ganesha was born on this day. The festival honours him as the Deity of New Beginnings and Obstacle Clearing and the god of Knowledge and Intellect. Popular legends claim that Goddess Parvati gave birth to Ganesha by making a murti out of the turmeric paste applied to her body. Shiva blessed him that he will be worshipped above all other gods forever. And that’s the reason, God Ganesha is given immense importance and love, even today. People pray to Ganesha before every new beginning, before everything, and above all.

Celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi before Independence

Although Indians celebrate this festival since ancient times, during the British Raj, the festival had lost its public charm. It was celebrated inside the houses where women made Ganesh Murti out of Clay and then worshipped it and did its Visarjan on the 10th Day.

Shri Lokmanya Tilak revived it to its original grandeur by opposing the British Government’s laws against a public assembly. And now, till today it’s the biggest festival in this country. It has always brought different religions, castes and communities together!
