Although Indians celebrate this festival since ancient times, during the British Raj, the festival had lost its public charm. It was celebrated inside the houses where women made Ganesh Murti out of Clay and then worshipped it and did its Visarjan on the 10th Day.

Celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in 2024

The public celebration goes on for 10 days. Before the first day, devotees organise the Murti Aagman where people bring their Ganesha idol to Homes, Public Mandaps, Pandals and Societies. Proper muhurta time, pooja and lots of folk dances, community gatherings of celebration, DJ music, dhols take place. The Mandap is beautifully decorated beforehand. Visarjan plays a vital role in the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. After 10 days, Ganesh Chaturthi comes to an end by immersing the Murti of Ganesh in water and bidding him a GoodBye saying “agle baras tu jaldi aana”.

During the 10 days, people celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in different ways.
