9 Traditional Styles of Draping Indian Sarees

Women wearing Saree will remain the key part and mark of the Indian heritage and culture throughout our country. 1. Athpourey Shari (West Bengal)

The Athpourey Shari style is a very traditional drape style wherein it has got pallus on both shoulders. The pallu comes from under the left shoulder and the wearer drapes over the right shoulder. The colour of this saree is a white colour with a red border. It is a little difficult to wear but enhances your whole look. It is a sign of respect for women in Bengal. Draping this saree, you can express your faith, passion and love for Maa Durga.

2. Nauvari Saree (Maharashtra)

One of the most popular traditional styles of draping Indian sarees, the term ‘Nauvari’ actually translates to ‘nine yards’ in Marathi and this name came from its length. It is a different style to wear a saree and resembles a dhoti. To wear it, you have to tuck the pleats of the saree from the back. 3. Seedha Pallu (Gujarat)

4.     Mekhala Chador (Assam)

Mekhala Chador is the traditional 3-piece Assamese handloom saree style, a must-try for you. Assamese mothers pass this saree style to their young daughters when they are able to carry off a saree. It is also a little tricky to drape but really comfortable to wear. This saree enhances a woman’s whole look and provides easy leg movement.

5.     Madisaru (Tamil Nadu)

Madisaru is mostly worn by married women in Tamil Nadu in their festivities and occasions. It was traditionally worn by the Iyer community. In this saree style, women don’t wear petticoats which makes it the most difficult style to drape. In this style of drape, the lower half is worn like a dhoti while the upper half is draped like a normal saree style.

6.     Kappulu (Andhra Pradesh)

The older women of Andhra Pradesh wear the Kappulu saree style and is the most interesting style of draping. Unlike the general saree draping styles that go from right to left, the drape of this saree style goes from left to right. It looks elegant and is one of the easiest styles to drape a saree.

7.     Coorgi Style (Karnataka)

Coorgi women wear the Coorgi saree drape style in a unique manner. Since the Coorgi women live a very active life, their saree drape style also accommodates the climbing up and down the mountains.

8.     Gol Sari (Parsi)

Parsi women wear the Gol Sari during special occasions. The pallu comes from the back and is draped over the blouse on the left shoulder. It is an amazing saree style if you want to showcase your embroidery work on your saree.

9.     Pavadai Dhavani (South India)

Pavadai Dhavani is a traditional draping style worn by Tamilian women. Tamil Nadu is famous for its silk sarees. Pattu is a special type of silk in South India and is worn by women there at the event of festivals and special occasions like marriages.
